I would say that it depends on the situation, though I would really see no reason for teachers to text kids on a regular basis. That said, when I was in charge of the volunteer club when I was teaching high school Spanish, I did have the phone numbers of most of the officers and they had my number. Our events were often on weekends and sometimes the students' rides would run late or the kids wouldn't be able to go, so they would need to get in contact with me. If I had a texting plan back then (2006), I probably would have texted them or had them text me instead of calling. But that would have been the only situations where I could imagine texting kids.
